I grew up in South Central Texas where I still reside today. I’ve been in business as a Farrier for 16 years and have started young horses and Mules on the side. Here recently I’ve been making adjustments to focus more on what I Love and that’s Starting colts.
At ALACRAN COLT COMPANY My goal when I work with horses and Mules is to make it as simple as possible for them to figure out what I want. Kind of a “set it up for it to happen” Over the years I’ve mainly started horses which I can honestly say for the most part are easier in my Opinion. Mules.. I’ve come to understand, are very different. I’ve started some GOOD ones and have encountered some really tough ones. IN the area where I live we don’t have any mountains most of this country is flat but we have just about every type of terrain you can think of from wet and boggy mud , rock , sand , to clay with plenty of woods and it can all be found in one county. The weather here is very humid and we have several months of HOT weather. The Mules I ride have proven themselves to me time and time again. They’ll go ALL DAY! I’ve enjoyed them and they’ve earned their keep. My mules must be comfortable in any aspect of ranch riding. Gathering , sorting , roping , doctoring etc… I strive to get them as gentle as possible from catching , saddling, loading, to bridling , clipping , and handling their feet. My Colt starting mentor used to tell me, "Get them BROKE ! THEY’LL LOVE YOU FOR IT!"
I’ve done my best that I know how to do their training up to this point. Nothing can make up for WET SADDLE PADS.
When someone asks me if my mounts are finished I reply by saying.. I’ve never owned a finished Mount.
The reason is because I feel like they can ALWAYS get better. My philosophy on my Mounts is “ I WANT THEM BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE I TURNED OUT, YET NOT AS GOOD AS THE NEXT !”.
I’ve sold a good number of Mounts in the past and my clients have been pleased and I wouldn’t want it any other way. The brand I have on my animals means a lot to me and it’s something that I hold in high regard.
The two I bring this year. (2022) BERETTA : I started her from the ground up. Bought her before the age of 2 and have done all the work myself. I’m very proud of her. She rides straight up in a Bridle Bit and she definitely is a Good one to be astride if you have a long day of ahead of you. COYOTÉ was my brothers project and I took him on afterwards . He is for sure worth his Salt as well. He can pull the long hours and will go anywhere you point him. Has a Good attitude and is Very Very Gentle.
I’m Proud of both my Mules.
